Looking to get started with Hurdlr? In this article, we've outlined the initial steps to set up your Hurdlr account and start tracking your business mileage, finances, and taxes. You can complete these steps on the mobile app (on your Android or iPhone) or on the web app (on your computer or tablet).

Add your business

In Hurdlr, the different companies that you own or work with (e.g., Uber, Airbnb, your real estate brokerage, your photography business, etc.) are called Businesses. Income, expenses, and mileage can all be tagged and tracked to a different Business. By tracking your data at the business level, you can see your profitability per business.

When you create your Hurdlr account, you're prompted to select your business; however, you can add additional businesses at any time by following these steps:

  1. Tap the three dots in the top left corner of the mobile app or click the gear icon in the top right corner of the web app

  2. Select ‘Businesses’

  3. Click the ‘+’ sign in the top right corner

  4. Enter your business information

  5. Click the ‘Save’ button

Set up mileage tracking

The mileage deduction is one of the most valuable tax deductions that self-employed entrepreneurs can take. Whether you're a rideshare driver, real estate agent, freelancer, network marketer, or any other type of self-employed entrepreneur, it's essential to track your mileage to maximize your tax deductions, and therefore your profit. To set up automatic mileage tracking in the mobile app:

  1. Navigate to the Mileage tab

  2. Toggle the Auto-Tracking toggle ON

To ensure your mileage is tracked, review the optimal settings that Hurdlr needs to track your trips properly. Android users should also review these Android specific settings to ensure your device allows Hurdlr to run in the background and track your mileage.

If you don’t want to track your mileage automatically, you can learn more about the alternative mileage tracking options that Hurdlr offers here.

Link your bank accounts and credit cards

Linking the financial institutions that you use for your business puts your finance tracking on auto-pilot and ensures that you never miss a deduction. To link your accounts, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the 3 dots in top left corner on the mobile app, or click the gear icon in top right corner on the web app

  2. Select Banks and Integrations

  3. Click ‘+Add Account’

  4. Choose one of the popular integrations or search for your financial institution

  5. Follow the prompts to securely link your accounts

You can add as many different institutions and accounts as you’d like. The only limitation is that you cannot link multiple logins at the same financial institution.

Once linked, Hurdlr will automatically pull in the past 30 days of transactions. However, it may be possible to pull in older transactions by following the steps here.

Complete your Tax Profile

Hurdlr estimates your federal, state, and self-employment taxes in real-time as you track your business data. To get the most accurate tax estimates, you will need to complete your Tax Profile by following these steps:

  1. Tap the three dots in the top left corner of the mobile app or click the gear icon in the top right corner of the web app

  2. Select Tax Profile

  3. If you have not yet set up your Tax Profile, follow the prompts to set it up
